VOLLEYBALL RULES OBJECT OF THE GAME
To cause the ball to strike the ground on the opponents court or to cause an opponent to engage in faulty playing. The ball is put in play with a service: hit by the server over the net to the opponents. The rally continues until the ball is; grounded on the playing court, goes “out” or a team fails to return it properly.
Rule 1 - UNIFORMS
1-1 All players must wear clean Athletic Shoes, shirts and shorts/pants (uniforms are considered part of a player’s body).
1-2 Participants must remove all jewellery before playing.
Rule 2 - PLAYERS
2-1 A team consists of six (6) players on the court – min 2 women
2-2 A team must start with a min. of 4 players (3 males and 1 female or 2 males and 2 females, etc.) or it will be recorded as a loss.
2-3 If a team only has 1 female they may only play with 4 males.
2-4 Substitution takes the server's place when he/she is to rotate to centre back position.
Rule 3 - SUBSTITUTIONS:KSSC feels that defaults should be prevented whenever possible. Teams pay to PLAY!!
3-1 A roster must be submitted to KSSC for each team. Players that are not on the roster are allowed to play as long as they sign a waiver first.
3-2 Players from a previous game can be borrowed but only to bring the team to the minimum number of 4 players. When the regular player arrives, he/she will take the place of the “picked up player” and the team will continue to play with 4 players.
3-3 A sub may only play in playoffs if:a. They participated during the regular seasonb. It is the only way the team will not forfeit and will bring the team to the minimum number.c. It is the responsibility of the team to ensure the sub is aware of all rules and policies.d. Other team members may not sub during playoffs.e.
Rule 4 - RULES OF PLAY
4-1 Three hits per side maximum
4-2 Ball may touch any part of the body (this includes the feet).
4-3 If the ball hits any part of the line, it is considered in and good.
4-4 The ball can hit the net on the serve and go over and is still good if it lands in.
4-4 The ball must be HIT; not caught, thrown, and/or be hit with separated hands unless it is obvious that a one-handed hit is intended.
4-5 Players of the serving team must not prevent their opponent from seeing the server or the path of the ball by use of screening.
4-6 If the ball hits any part of the line, it is considered in and good.
4-7 The 1 hour time limit or best two-out-of-three wins the game, which ever comes first.
4-8 Service zone is the full width of the court.
4-9 All three (3) games go to 25 points and are played using the rally point system. Each game is to be won by 2 points.
4-10 Best of 3 games wins the points. If a game is unfinished, the team that is ahead by 2 or more points when time expires is declared the winner of that game.** Remember 1 hour time limit!
4-11 Re-serve/replay is done when the ball hits the gym curtain, another ball enters the court of play, both teams foul simultaneously, or a player is injured.
4-12 The ceiling, walls, wood supports on the ceiling, and the fans are considered out and either a point or loss of serve is created.
4-13 Jump Serves are not allowed in the KSSC Leagues unless both Team Captain’s agree.
Rule 5 - FOULS AND ERRORS The penalty for a foul is a point scored for the opponents or the loss of serve.
5-1 More than 3 hits on one side.
5-2 A player touching the net.
5-3 A double hit (only one consecutive hit per person).
5-4 Contacting the ball on the opponents' side of the net. (N.B. A follow-through on a spike that started on the right side of the net is not considered a foul, nor is reaching over to block on their third hit).
5-5 Back row players spiking closer than the 10 foot line.
5-6 Server hits the ball out of bounds or into the net.
5-7 Ball hits the ceiling, floor, or back wall (read tree, fence, sun bather). 5-8 A player touching the net or stepping over the centerline. **Centerline infractions are major injuries on the court, please be aware of this hazard, particularly while blocking.
Rule 6 - REPLAY
6-1 If the ball hits an object that is hanging down. (ie. Basketball hoops that extend over the out line).
6-2 There is interference (e.g. ball on court).
6-3 Double Foul.
6-4 Injury to a player.
Rule 7 - NO SHOW
7-1 This means that less than 4 players on the team (min. 1 woman) are available to play 10 minutes after scheduled start time and results in a win for the attending team and -2 for the opposing team.
7-2 If your team needs to cancel or reschedule, you must contact the opposing team no later than 24 hours prior to the scheduled game time. Report any schedule changes immediately to the Score / Info Line (215-4615).
Rule 8 - OFFICIALS
8-1 Rules will be enforced primarily by the "honour system". Players will be expected to rule whether or not there is a foul or a ball is out. All contests will be supervised by a Court Monitor when possible. The Court Monitor’s responsibility will be to rule on any situation in which teams cannot agree. THE COURT MONITOR’S DECISION IS FINAL – NO EXCEPTIONS.
8-2 Court monitors may warn players and technical fouls on those who display unsportsmanlike conduct (Rule 9). Any player receiving 2 technical fouls in a game will be ejected and suspended a minimum of one game. Suspensions will begin with their next scheduled game. Severe infractions or multiple technical fouls may result in suspensions from matches or tournaments.NOTE: A Court Monitor is not required to warn a player before calling a technical foul.
Rule 9 - UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT
Unsportsmanlike conduct may include but is not limited to:
· Foul language
· Hits above the shoulders (competitive league only)
· Unnecessary roughness
· Arguing with officials, staff, participants, or fans
· Abuse of the honour systemIf a formal complaint is issued (Rule 10) the team captain will receive feedback from KSSC. This will arrive in email form so that it can be easily forwarded to the team. Teams are always welcome to provide their own feedback on the game.
At KSSC’s sole discretion, the player or team may either receive: (a) A warning; (b) A game misconduct; (c) A league ejection
No refunds are issued to players or teams ejected from the league.
Rule 10 - SCORING
10-1 Standings: A team is awarded 2 points for a win or 0 for a loss. -2 if they are a no show (Rule 7).
10-2 Sportsmanship points: Sportsmanship ratings will be given per game from the opposing team at the end of the match.

| 1 | The team was a lot of fun and made a genuine attempt to call their own penalties/infractions |
| 0 | This team was OK. There are two scenarios: (1) they were average in both Fun and Accountability; (2) they were strong in one area but weak in the other area. |
| -1 | The team was not fun (too intense or aggressive) and generally did not follow the rules and call their own penalties/infractions. |
Note: To issue a -1 point, the team must submit a formal explanation for review. If it is determined to be unnecessary then the team will be given a 0 rating.
10-3 End of season rankingIf teams are tied for points, ranking will be based on earned sportsmanship points. If teams are still tied, points for and against will be used from the regular season.
